All of our bicycle officers are certified as Police CyclistsTM by the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA).

Certification consists of a 40-hour course which includes both classroom and on-bike lessons.  Among these blocks of instruction, officers are taught the concepts of vehicular cycling, group riding, youth bicycle education, bike maintenance, slow speed skills, obstacle clearing and others.  The course is physically and mentally demanding and requires that officers commit themselves to the demands of police cycling.

More information about police cycling is available at www.ipmba.org

New Organization as of 05 November 2007

Officers are stationed at eleven police substations located throughout Bethlehem and Bethlehem Housing Authority properties.  The City is divided into four major regions with a major substation designated in each precinct.  Each precinct is managed by a sergeant from one of each of the three platoons which work day and middle shift.  During these two shifts, there is a sergeant responsible for all activity within that precinct.  There are four sergeants and one lieutenant for each of the three platoons which are under the oversight of a Captain.  Each platoon consists of twenty-two officers, which include four full-time and three part-time bike officers, a Parks officer and DARE/School resource officers.  All members of each platoon are responsible for all events in their respective precincts, including all requests for service, tours of police headquarters, and speaking engagements; under the direction of the Precinct Sergeant.  Requests for service can be directed to the Community Patrol Captain John Sarnicky at 610.865.7158, or to your respective police precinct.
